Your Options for Garage Door Tracks
Feb. 3, 2025A garage door doesn’t work without garage door tracks. Most homeowners probably know that, but what many might not know is that there are many different options for garage door tracks than just the standard option. What options are there and which one should you choose for your new garage door? That depends on many different factors.
In this blog, we’ll take a look at what your options are and what you should consider when making your choice. Contact the experts at Wayne Dalton Sales & Service today to install a new garage door and tracks.

Types of Tracks
There are five basic garage door track options. These are:
- Standard radius – these are the most common type of garage door. How large the radius can be depends on the amount of headroom you have between the tracks and the walls and ceiling. This comes in variations, with the standard being a 15” radius, but can come in anything from 12” and up.
- Low headroom – this is a common variety of garage door track that requires less headroom than the standard radius track. It uses a second track on top of the first one to help move the top section of the door, allowing the rest of the door to move easily.
- High lift – in garages where the ceiling is much higher than is typical, a high lift track may be useful. It uses more vertical track and less horizontal track. More of the door stays vertical when in an open position.
- Follow roof pitch – this track will follow the pitch of the roof structure. It is a stylized option that has track sections cut at an angle to follow the actual structure of the roof itself rather than being perfectly horizontal.
- Vertical lift – a vertical lift track is similar to a high lift track, except that it features no horizontal track whatsoever. It moves away from the wall only enough to accommodate the garage door opener.

How to Choose Your Track
Choosing the right track configuration depends on several factors such as the size of your garage, the height of your ceiling, the intended use of your garage, and your personal preferences. You should consider:
- Headroom – headroom is the space above the top part of the garage door. It’s measured from the highest point of the door to the nearest objects above the door, whether that is the ceiling, pipes, support beams, or steel rods.
- Sideroom – the sideroom is the amount of space between the side of the vertical portion of the track and the nearest obstacle. This determines the size of the torsion spring and the amount of space for the track brackets.
- Backroom – backroom is how much space there is from the top of the opened garage door to the back wall of the garage.
